OVERVIEW

This new immersive audio artwork, created by Aimee Chapman and David Gagliardi (Designer, Artistic Director & Composer) for Sonic Gold Studios, will soon become a major part of both the indoor and outdoor visitor journey at Bendigo Military Museum.

As listeners move through the Storyscape, they will encounter a blend of composition, dialogue and sound design that vividly brings stories to life.

Stories at home, stories abroad – fragments of diaries, voices of those we’ve interviewed, tender reflections, quiet courage, unexpected joy and connection amidst layered, and often conflicting emotions invite visitors not simply to hear history, but to feel it.

The work consists of:

  • Sound Design
  • Music Composition
  • Story (first-hand accounts from our interviews and research)
  • Voice (story re-enactments by actors)
  • Inside the Museum: a 10 stop Binaural Spatial Audio experience for headphones
  • Outside the Museum: a 3 stop GPS-Triggered Audio journey
interior (binaural spatial audio)

Each interior stop features a carefully crafted binaural spatial mix, designed to create the impression of sound surrounding the listener when experienced on headphones. Using advanced spatialisation tools, we position layers of sound – footsteps that seem to pass beside you, voices that feel close or distant, ambient details that expand the space – to build a rich and dimensional listening field. This approach goes well beyond conventional stereo. The result is an experience that feels more immersive and alive, drawing visitors deeper into each story.

exterior (gps-triggered audio)

The exterior journey uses GPS-triggered audio via a sound walk tool. Visitors simply download the free app and as they walk, sounds and stories are automatically activated by their location. This Exterior journey is available at all times. Opening the museum up to visitors even when it’s closed.

visual design (floor map)

From the moment visitors arrive at the front counter, they’re drawn into the Storyscape through beautifully integrated design – decals on the front windows, a map at the counter, and numbered artwork flowing across the floor – all echoing the graceful contour lines of Bendigo’s historic Fortuna maps. They’re greeted not only by one of the museum’s wonderful volunteers, but by something that feels part-treasure hunt, part-adventure.
