SYNOPSIS
Both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Six characters at their final moments of life.
Speechless, wordless. Dark but beautiful. An intimate journey about life and death.
EGTH is as many stories as people who experience it.
PARTNERS
Development of the work so far has been funded by Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Victoria, Regional Arts Victoria, Creative Partnerships Australia, Ulumbarra Foundation and the Besen Family Foundation.
Supported by Bendigo Venues & Events, Dirty Puppet, Emporium Creative Hub and Piano World Australia.
And the generosity of an amazing community of donors.
LIVE-STAGE VERSION
Combines live performance, illustration, animation, multi-screen video art, sound design, lighting design and a composition for 6 pianos.
On stage, the backdrop is a floor to ceiling video screen. In front of that, the six (upright) pianos, backs facing the audience, are lined up across the stage forming a wall of sound and acting as six individual screens.
The animations depict each character’s final moments. Each animation is then followed by a musical elegy, a composition for six pianos supported by multi-screen video art and lighting design, which extends the narrative and provides space for us to feel, reflect and think about ourselves, our close relationships and dealing with end of life.
CONCEPT TOURING (LIVE-STAGE VERSION)
With environmental impact in mind, this work has been designed in a way that makes it possible to tour without people or ‘stuff’.
Using Qlab, ETC and MadMapper, all video art, animations, lighting and soundscapes are synced to a click track and fully automated. Whether it’s Perth, Prague or Portland USA, in this scenario we can supply the show files, digital copies of the score, stage and lighting plots, and the presenter supplies the pianos and local pianists. The wordless nature of the work means language is not a barrier either.
This option allows the work to be presented nationally or internationally at almost any time. It provides presenters an opportunity to place their local performers on stage, allowing the work to be international and hyper local at the same time.
DEVELOPMENT
Made in Bendigo. An original work by David Gagliardi influenced by his experiences in both the performing arts industry and alternative music scene. Further developed with local artists Ginny Jeong (illustrator), Hermione Merry (video artist) and Ben Van Dillen (lighting design/technical management). In total this work involves 24 Victorian artists and arts workers – 18 of which are members of our local creative community.
